IELTS General Training

For candidates taking IELTS for work, migration or other general purposes.

Who It's For

Is General Training Right for You?

IELTS General Training is commonly required for immigration purposes, work applications, and some professional registration routes that don't require the Academic version. It tests everyday, workplace, and social English.

Always confirm with your employer, immigration route or regulatory body which version of IELTS they require before you begin preparing — this varies by pathway.

How It Differs From Academic

Reading

Passages are drawn from everyday sources — advertisements, notices, workplace documents and general-interest texts — rather than academic material.

Writing Task 1

A letter — formal, semi-formal or informal — responding to a given situation, rather than a data-description report.

Writing Task 2

A similar essay format to Academic, though topics are generally more general-interest in nature.

Listening & Speaking

Identical in format and difficulty to the Academic test — the same recordings and speaking format are used for both versions.

  • Practice with letter-writing formats and appropriate tone for Task 1.
